It is a special day for sportsman Gautam Gambhir as he marries Natasha Jain, daughter of a prominent businessman.

Reports say that the ceremony will be held at the Westend Farms in Gurgaon Road, Delhi. The pheras will begin at around 5pm.

The mehndi ceremony took place at 5pm last evening followed by the sangeet ceremony, while the haat thera ceremony was held at Ms Jain’s house this morning.

Around 300 guests have been invited to the private affair, including cricketer Sachin Tendulkar and actor Shah Rukh Khan. Gautam was also keen on having perform at his wedding but this was unfortunately not possible due to a visa issue.

Bride Natasha will be wearing a gown made by fashion designer Tarun Tahiliani during the marriage ceremony.

Famous wedding planner Meher Sarid and Sunny Sarid have given the wedding venue a stylish floral look with elaborate décor in maroon, off white and gold. In addition, fresh flowers have been exported from abroad to add to the celebration.

Later in the evening, the newly married couple will give media interviews for 45 minutes at a separate venue and will then head back to the wedding venue where the reception will be followed with a dinner party.

It is rumoured that the dinner will include an elaborate menu of Indian, Thai and Continental dishes, plus a special paan stall. And since Gautam is extremely fond of hot chocolate fudge, a chocolate fountain will be flowing.

Lavish Delhi Wedding Defies Congress Calls to Cut Spending

The Hindu marriage ceremony of Lalit Tanwar and Yogita Jaunapuria on Tuesday night at a family farmhouse near Delhi has been reported to have raised the bar in extravagance.

It took 1000 workers 40 days to prepare the venue. The celebration included 100 dishes (no meat or alcohol were served as per Hindu tradition) and 12 giant TV screens to broadcast proceedings.

The exact details of the wedding which united two prominent political families have been fiercely disputed. Some reports say 18,000 guests were in attendance, others put the figure closer to 30,000. The Times of India calculated the total cost of the occasion at $21.68 million, while the Mail Today quoted $55 million.

The groom himself wore a garland made of banknotes and received a helicopter as a gift. His barber was also awarded a $5,500 gift.

The lavish occasion went ahead despite pleas from Sonia Gandhi, the Congress party leader, for government members and affiliates to cut back on spending.

It has also been reported that in addition to the main event, millions were spent on celebrations beforehand.

Indian Couples Inspired By Royal Wedding

It appears that the desire of Indian couples to have an even more spectacular marriage celebration than they were previously famous for has exploded, thanks to the Royal Wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton.

Thanks to recent booms in the Indian economy, many families are now allocating huge budgets for weddings, with opulent displays of wealth and prosperity being commonplace.

The trend to continually put on ever more extravagant wedding ceremony amongst the upper class continues to rise, with celebrity appearances, artistic performances and 1,000s of guests becoming just a few of the must-have’s when it comes to commemorating the special occasion.

Increasingly, huge buffets are prepared for the guests in lavishly decorated banquet halls and it is not uncommon for the bride and groom to arrive by elephant, helicopter or horse-drawn carriage. It is also becoming the norm for Indian weddings of the rich and famous to cost upwards of an astounding £4 million.

With the images and memories of the recent Royal Wedding providing inspiration families seem all the more keen to outdo each other, leading to an upcoming wedding season that will reach new levels of opulence.

India Gold Buying Rise 15% for Wedding Season

India, the world’s largest consumer of gold, is set to see a 15% increase in gold sales ahead of the wedding season that starts next month, regardless of record high prices.

The wedding season officially begins from the second week of April. Purchases start a fortnight before that and make up approximately half of all sales.

Jeweller Bachhraj Bamalwa, founder partner of Nemichand Bamalwa, commented: “Price rise has not stopped people from buying gold jewellery for the wedding season. We are expecting a 10-15% growth in gold jewellery buying this season.”

While the rise in gold prices has not stemmed people’s appetite for it, this factor has brought a change in design trend – people are increasingly opting for light-weight jewellery with a heavy look. To cater to this, most of the jewellery chains in West Bengal have created light gold designs that suit the pockets of the middle class, who are the largest consumer of gold jewellery in India.

However, jewellers also say traditional heavy jewellery continues to be popular for marriages.
