India to Host Ultra Lavish Wedding

India is to host a six-day wedding next month which is set to make the Royal nuptials seem rather modest.

Two of the country’s most prominent families will hold the special event in the town of Safai, Uttar Pradesh – the attendance of which could fill London’s O2 arena five times over.

The guest list is also likely to read like a who’s who of Indian business, politics, religion and Bollywood.

Prateek Yadav, 23, and Aparna Bisht, 21 will tie the knot in lavish style. The wedding, which opens on 2 December and concludes with a reception in Lucknow for 1,500 people on the 7th, has taken six months to prepare.

The actual ceremony will fall on the third day, when numbers will swell to 100,000. Food will be distributed, and the local streets are to be flooded with music and dancing.

Prateek’s father, is the distinguished head of the Samajwadi (Socialist) Party, three times Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh (India’s most populous region with 200 million citizens), an ex-Defence Minister of India and a political hero to millions around the country.

Aparna’s father, Arvind Singh Bisht, is the editor of the Lucknow branch of The Times of India in Uttar Pradesh.

The couple have been friends for eight years, romantically making them high-school sweethearts.

Saif and Kareena to Tie the Knot Next Year

The hottest couple in Bollywood are causing a stir with talk of marriage next year.

While actors Saif Ali Khan and his girlfriend have generally been tight lipped about their relationship, an exclusive interview with NDTV revealed that Saif is looking forward to tying the knot with Bebo and will announce the wedding date after the release of his new movie ‘Agent Vinod’.

The 41-year-old Bollywood star is keeping fans guessing by saying that he wants to focus on his movie project for the moment before releasing more details.

Nevertheless, rumours about Kareena Kapoor’s wedding outfit are already rife. She is said to be making frequent trips to Delhi for fittings with popular fashion designer Ritu Kumar.

Further rumours indicate that Manish Malhotra will be the designer for Kareena as they are friends. Saif’s mother Sharmila Tagore also has an old association with Kumar and reportedly wants her to design the wedding dresses for her future daughter-in-law.

What’s more, the dupatta Sharmila wore on her wedding day will reportedly be incorporated in Bebo’s wedding attire since the family wants a royal traditional look for Kareena on her special day.

Lavish Delhi Wedding Defies Congress Calls to Cut Spending

The Hindu marriage ceremony of Lalit Tanwar and Yogita Jaunapuria on Tuesday night at a family farmhouse near Delhi has been reported to have raised the bar in extravagance.

It took 1000 workers 40 days to prepare the venue. The celebration included 100 dishes (no meat or alcohol were served as per Hindu tradition) and 12 giant TV screens to broadcast proceedings.

The exact details of the wedding which united two prominent political families have been fiercely disputed. Some reports say 18,000 guests were in attendance, others put the figure closer to 30,000. The Times of India calculated the total cost of the occasion at $21.68 million, while the Mail Today quoted $55 million.

The groom himself wore a garland made of banknotes and received a helicopter as a gift. His barber was also awarded a $5,500 gift.

The lavish occasion went ahead despite pleas from Sonia Gandhi, the Congress party leader, for government members and affiliates to cut back on spending.

It has also been reported that in addition to the main event, millions were spent on celebrations beforehand.

Indian Couples Inspired By Royal Wedding

It appears that the desire of Indian couples to have an even more spectacular marriage celebration than they were previously famous for has exploded, thanks to the Royal Wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton.

Thanks to recent booms in the Indian economy, many families are now allocating huge budgets for weddings, with opulent displays of wealth and prosperity being commonplace.

The trend to continually put on ever more extravagant wedding ceremony amongst the upper class continues to rise, with celebrity appearances, artistic performances and 1,000s of guests becoming just a few of the must-have’s when it comes to commemorating the special occasion.

Increasingly, huge buffets are prepared for the guests in lavishly decorated banquet halls and it is not uncommon for the bride and groom to arrive by elephant, helicopter or horse-drawn carriage. It is also becoming the norm for Indian weddings of the rich and famous to cost upwards of an astounding £4 million.

With the images and memories of the recent Royal Wedding providing inspiration families seem all the more keen to outdo each other, leading to an upcoming wedding season that will reach new levels of opulence.

India Gold Buying Rise 15% for Wedding Season

India, the world’s largest consumer of gold, is set to see a 15% increase in gold sales ahead of the wedding season that starts next month, regardless of record high prices.

The wedding season officially begins from the second week of April. Purchases start a fortnight before that and make up approximately half of all sales.

Jeweller Bachhraj Bamalwa, founder partner of Nemichand Bamalwa, commented: “Price rise has not stopped people from buying gold jewellery for the wedding season. We are expecting a 10-15% growth in gold jewellery buying this season.”

While the rise in gold prices has not stemmed people’s appetite for it, this factor has brought a change in design trend – people are increasingly opting for light-weight jewellery with a heavy look. To cater to this, most of the jewellery chains in West Bengal have created light gold designs that suit the pockets of the middle class, who are the largest consumer of gold jewellery in India.

However, jewellers also say traditional heavy jewellery continues to be popular for marriages.

Kareena Kapoor Dazzles at Wedding Carnival

Kareena Kapoor looked spectacular in a sheer pink sari at Mumbai’s Hotel President on April 7to celebrate the launch of The Great Indian Wedding Carnival.

The 30 year old Bollywood actress paired her sari with a sequined mini halter blouse and accessorised with diamond jewels, chandelier earrings and a bracelet on her right arm.

She wore striking eye makeup, with thick eyeliner on her eyelids and pink sparkling eye shadow as well as lipstick. Her long dark brown hair was styled straight with a middle parting and a jewelled bindi rounded off her festive look.

‘The Great Indian Wedding Carnival’  is a large shopping festival organised by India’s leading jewellery brands, including Nakshatra, Gili, Asmi, D’damas, Sangini, Diya and Menz.  Running from April 8to May 5 this year, it has been launched to coincide with the Indian marriage season.

In a press statement endorsing the festival, Ms Kapoor said: “Today’s Indian bride is showing an increasing preference for jewellery that integrates an international diamond look into traditional wedding jewellery designs.”

Kapoor remained tight-lipped about her own upcoming wedding plans and avoided questions from the attendant media crowd, revealing no new information.

The special occasion was held at the Hyderabad International Trade Exposition Centre, a state-of-the-art venue for grand events. All roads leading to it were closed as top figures from all over the country attended. Considering the connections of the family, the guest list ran into the thousands.
